new journal, miss_steffs

my lips are tingling from the "sexy mother pucker" Claire Yvette kindly gave me for my birthday, I think they have grown too - a tiny bit.

My band have been asked to play the Gibson street party of the west end festival, whilst this may not be the epitome of success it makes me happy. Considering it's only our sixth gig and we suck at promoting ourselves. I guess it makes me happy as I've enjoyed that aspect of the festival over the last few years.

Stoo has run me a bath, I better let him on.

The Occassional Flickers are originally from Athens, Greece.

The band centres around Giorgos who has since relocated to Edinburgh. Judging by the bands "Scottish" sound you would have thought that is where he originally hailed from! Giorgos has been going under the Occasional Flickers guise for a couple of years now and the début album Scattered Songs has just been released on Peru's Plastilna Records which is the home to the likes of Annemarie and Amida amongst others.

If you head over to My Space you will find three tracks from the album available for streaming. It's hard not to think of bands like Belle & Sebastian or Butcher Boy when listening to these songs. There is also an obvious influence taken from singer songwriters especially those who lean to a more folkish sound such as Nick Drake for example. Of the three I really like Sunward and on it you will hear where I am coming from regarding the comparisons. These are heartfelt indie pop songs of the lo-fi variety you will definitely want in your collection.

The one-day content strike is on for this Friday, March 21, from midnight GMT to midnight GMT.

For 24 hours, we will not post or comment to LJ. Not in our own journals, not in communities. Not publicly, privately, or under friends-lock.

This is a protest that will have long-lasting effects, showing up forever in the daily posting statistics.

This is a protest that will not harm LJ in the long run, as leaving LJ might do.

This is a protest that will demonstrate the power of community, as all users unite to support Basic users, the concept of adfree space, and our right to enjoy any interests we choose.

This is a protest that will educate the new owners that LJ is driven by user-created content.

How Can You Help?

DO post about this in your own LJ.
DO post and comment about it in appropriate communities.
DO turn off LoudTwitter and your RSS feeds for 24 hours.
DO feel free to friend me for updates, and defriend when the strike is over.

DON'T forget to get permission from community mods before making an off-topic post or comment about the strike.
DON'T be spammy with your posts or comments about the strike.
DON'T forget to turn your LoudTwitter and RSS feeds back on when the strike is over.

Appropriate Times

The 24-hour strike will begin at the following times for the following locations:

Thursday, March 20, 2:00 PM -- Honolulu
Thursday, March 20, 4:00 PM -- Anchorage
Thursday, March 20, 5:00 PM -- San Francisco; Los Angeles
Thursday, March 20, 6:00 PM -- Mexico City; Denver
Thursday, March 20, 7:00 PM -- Chicago
Thursday, March 20, 8:00 PM -- Montreal; New York
Thursday, March 20, 9:00 PM -- Buenos Aires
Midnight -- London
Friday, March 21, 1:00 AM -- Paris
Friday, March 21, 2:00 AM -- Istanbul
Friday, March 21, 3:00 AM -- Moscow
Friday, March 21, 4:00 AM -- Dubai
Friday, March 21, 5:00 AM -- Islamabad
Friday, March 21, 6:00 AM -- Bangladesh

Why Are We Striking?

We are holding the Content Strike because we want the new owners of LiveJournal to better understand the power and resolve of the LJ Community of Users.

We are holding the Content Strike because all of us, Paid, Permanent and Plus users as well as Basic, want to demonstrate our solidarity as a Community of Users. We do not consider Basic users to be freeloaders, we consider them to be valuable content-providers and Friends.

We are holding the Content Strike because we ache to do something to show our displeasure, and commenting on the news post -- even with cat macros -- just isn't powerful enough!

The strike has four terms:

1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation.

2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources.

3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change.

4. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate.

NOTE: We are aware that there may be good business decisions for eliminating Basic accounts. If Basic accounts are to be eliminated, though, that action should be taken only after approval of the Advisory Board and consultation with the LJ Community of Users.

Will This Make Any Difference?

The protests are making a difference. Within the last three hours (as of 3pm March 17, '08), the censored interests have been restored! If you look at the Popular Interests page, you will once again see the formerly filtered "fanfiction", "depression", "bisexuality" -- even "faeries". LiveJournal is once again presenting its true face to the world, not a sanitized blandness.

Please continue to spread the word about the Content Strike. We are not merely consumers. We are a Community of Users, and we will be heard.

LiveJournal Content Strike, Friday, March 21, midnight to midnight GMT.
No posts. No comments. No content.

ARGH. [12 Mar 2008|02:33am]
[ mood | pure miffed. ]
[ music | add n to (x) - plug me in ]

I was having a relaxing evening, I prepared Stewart and I a lovely vegetable stir fry with noodles for our dinner, I irritatingly channel flicked through various cable television shite whilst he recorded a tune on Garageband in the bedroom. We then came together to eat chocolate, watch the West Wing on DVD and retire to bed. Now, I am all wound up because I have access to the internet and am not a right wing bampot.

For my non British friends the BNP are a very right wing group in our political system.

A post on [info]theladiesloos made me aware of several groups on the omnipresent FACEBOOK which are anti Muslim in tone (if you don’t like England, fuck off home! And “Why do I have less rights than immigrants?” being the selected ‘highlights’. Over 60,000 members in one group. Curious, I decided to check them out – fully expecting most posts to be from ill educated and/or arses - and was horrified to see that the British National Party is using these groups to entice particularly young people to their fold via their youth edition. Lost, poorly informed children and hate politics that relies on fear, they go hand in hand eh?

What really got my goat was that they have basterdised a photograph of my beloved Herman Munster, a hero of my childhood, he himself has received much abuse due to looking different from everyone and is an immigrant to America, being from British, German and Romanian origins. Of which the BNP speculated makes him more likely to insult us Brits due to his mixed European background – if indeed their insight into insults given to white Brits are anything to go by…

(those giving the insults are) More likely from some sink estate/eastern european background. Of course, it could always be from the left wing middle classes that seem to have infiltrated local govenrment these days, Red Ken Livingston et al.
Just more proof of how we all live in the rich tapestry of multi-cultural 21st
century Britain

So now us lefties are getting it too along with Mr Munster? Great! Why do people find it to easy to hate someone on what they look like or where they are from? I know it comes down to fear, but why? I've never understood it. It also annoys me when people claim racism has went away - my friend Angela and I go for phone interviews at the same bank - I get told "great! let's start the interview!" She gets told "Sorry, we are not looking just now" who sounds like they were not born in the UK? I'll let you guess that one...

Then I find out they support a record label that only relases patriotic (read racist) music, they have named it… wait for it… Great White Records!. Could you make this up?

The enemies of British Nationalism continue to parrot the claim that the BNP is a “racist party.” URGH, I hate it when political parties refer to themselves as an idea, saying you are not the enemy of our party – you are the enemy of your countries pride itself! I like my country, sure it's not brilliant and if anyone wants to come here to flee persecution or to better themselves through education and work not available in their homelands I'm pretty much for it. I am a quarter Italian of course, my relatives got on the boat from South Italy to head to America for a better life - as they were daft they got off in Scotland by mistake and now here I am.

OK enough incoherent ranting for one night, I should sleep now as I’m meeting the Mother for soup tomorrow. Band is going well, hooray. This is now farce and I am tired. Goodnight.

Handy Hint!

These are just my views, the BNP are allowed free speech as am I and as are you.

girls who spoke about their ovaries used to annoy me... [06 Mar 2008|04:01pm]
[ mood | sore ]
[ music | ani di franco ]

I have sore ovaries and I am listening to Ani Di Franco for the first time since Daniel ran away with his boyfriend when I was fifteen and worried me sick. I can still remember being called out of Higher English by the teacher who’s leg hairs poked out her opaque tights. I thought someone had died from her steely yet sympathetic manner. That was over half a decade ago and I can still remember all the words to this “untouchable face” song, yeah! Fuck you for existing in the first place! I need to listen to more of her and less wanky free jazz.

Speaking of Daniel I am glad he’s emerging from hot multi-racial “civil partnership” bliss, though I prefer to call it a marriage, and Arabic studies down in London back to his granny’s in Newarthill, darkest Lanarkshire to celebrate his 21st birthday later this month/ early next. I hope he likes what I’ve got him! I have still never been to London, heck I’ve been to SPAIN ten times or so yet never yet made it there (though I reckon that had much to do with First Choice’s free child places) In short, yay! Daniel! Or [info]violentlyhappy' as he goes by round these parts. I still have no idea what to do for mine, pink limo?

In other news I shall now neurotically clean the flat in light of the landlady coming to visit tomorrow to repair the fuse box, which has seen us living in darkness (save for two lamps) for the last few days. Mainly as we are having guests round, I quite like the ambient lighting. I need vitamins.

I have been grappling with wordpress recently, trying to create a proper blog, along with grappling on how to adapt to a Mac after ten years of solid microsoft PC use. If I can bloody well operate half a million pounds worth of complicated X-Ray machinery in a hospital then I can conquer this! This logic makes sense in my head…

It looks like I may have to relocate back to Motherwell for a few months in summer like I did last year in order to work for the lovely North Lanarkshire Council again, I could get a job in Glasgow and not have to sacrifice my lovely west end flat in the process – however the lure of great pay is calling me – then I can get another flat in Glasgow towards the end of summer, wash rinse and repeat. Again.

Recently I have been enjoying reading “She’s Come Undone” by Wally Lamb which was lent to me by Sophie last time I shacked up in her house, drank all her tea and stole old photos of my boyfriend, sold out the 13th Note venue as part of an eighteen membered weird pop-folk orchestra (download a free mp3 here!), going out for long walks, seen Ms. Broadhurst live again, nagged Jamie and wondering just what the hell I should do for my 21st birthday party. I’ve done loads of other things too, of course – among them feeling pangs of guilt for neglecting livejournal – four years of a habit take a long time to die though so I am giving it another chance.

Hello!

ps) I got into a fight with a jakey on the bus last night and I won! Only by shouting at him, no violence was used. I am scary when angry. He did start it.

a nice wee gig [09 Jan 2008|03:07pm]
[ mood | busy ]
[ music | "spaced"on tv ]

The Second Hand Marching Band are an unusal affair, fourteen members strong they utilise, strings, horns, drums, accordians and voices to create rousing folk. They are quite new to this gigging lark, indeed this is only their second one. To check them out, or to download a free mp3 or two please go here…

If you are not familiar with The Just Joans, then you are in for a treat. Their debut album `Last Tango In Motherwell` is a home recorded classic nestling somewhere between the Magnetic Fields and Half Man Half Biscuit and lurking round underpasses in deepest darkest Lanarkshire. Now with many more members their music strays into 60s girl band style choruses which proclaim glee at taunting the poor kid in your class at high school who just could not get nipped. That’s “given a kiss” for the more erudite amongst us.

Also performing is the lovely Ceylan Hay, whilst she may be young in years it has often been said that her songs of love, lust and heartbreak convey a rich experience way beyond the comprehension of most established singer songwriters. As part of the parsonage choir and solo she has wowed audiences at many of Scotland’s major and minor festivals with her swooping soprano voice.

[ mood | ill ]
[ music | diamanda galas - dead cat on the line ]

It is mine and stoo’s two year anniversary today and thanks to the God of “oh bollocks to it!” I am stuck in bed ill. No nice meal and movie for me then! I’ll just have to watch the Scott Walker DVD instead that I bought from Fopp. I have high hopes for it.

Hmmm Fopp, the amount of choice has certainly gone down since I was in there last and HMV bought it, the foreign film section is a shadow of it’s former self - to say the least. I understand that those films are hardly the most profitable ones for a shop to sell and often they were well out of my price range (£20 for a DVD is too expensive for a poor student like me!) It's open and I should be happy, plenty of cheap books still.

In other news I have joined a band along with [info]singlefished, [info]shouldberinging and perhaps [info]fortuneandglory and [info]jamieboy for good measure. We sound like this . If you like Beirut you might enjoy us.

les club des chats!

Formed in 2004, Le Club des Chats is a guitar/drums/singing duet and much more. Its line-up includes Maïa, former member of Putrella Forever and Guillaume (aka Le Chevalier de Rinchy), former member of Cartouch. They play what can be described as "chaotic pop" or "rock for cats," short and minimalist songs that tell bizarre yarns about hysterical cats in clumsy English. Le Club des Chats creates a universe that is not only musical, but also visual. It involves numerous drawings, videos and unique hand-made items.

watch them here!

Wall Street Ammunition Hero hove into view sporting deceptively rational verses, becoming more unhinged bridges and google-eyed frenzy choruses. Low-end guitars and fuzzy bass recall 64 Slices of American Cheese mid-90s genius like Magoo, rattling off Devo and Slint on the way – hi-scoring musical pinball.

Bo deadly… Specky punk finally has a home, and that home is the dynamic Bodeadly. Who would have thought that a mutual respect for Bo Diddly and Elvis Costello would produce the frantic and conflicting pop musings that blaze enthusiasm and vigour like no other of the same vein.

Vars of Litchi are one of the most, dare I say it, original bands to have come from Glasgow in years, warm far eastern rhythms married to a more classical American indie rock guitar sound. It would be an insult and a push to compare them to X or Y bands or artists, they surely exist all on their own. Having recently supported Six Organs of Admittance in Nice ‘N’ Sleazy their exciting live set is impressing more people all the time

To listen to “Molehill” by Le Club Des Chats please come this way!

I have been sent home from work, how rock ‘n’ roll of me, though it should be noted that I managed to last until almost two p.m after starting at eight thirty in the morning (not including a lunch break) whilst feeling ready to paint my desk the hue of vile. That’s dedication for you. Paid in five days, enough to make anyone smile. I've stopped boaking for now.

Working six days a week is surely sending me to lala land but the merciful end is in sight! Within seven weeks I should be back to university where I belong. On the flat hunt again, waiting to hear back from a Highland based artist who may be interested in joining us on our adventures in skanky student living.

Earlier this summer I decided to take photographs of some friends that I encountered during a single day looking as grumpy as they possibly could, for no real reason, they looked a bit like this… )

It also saddens me to report that the Chinese river dolphin has been declared extinct, the largest known vertebrae to be granted this sad status in over fifty years :

The species (Lipotes vexillifer) was the only remaining member of the Lipotidae, an ancient mammal family that is understood to have separated from other marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and porpoises, about 40-20 million years ago.

The white, freshwater dolphin had a long, narrow beak and low dorsal fin; lived in groups of three or four and fed on fish.

It was once my childhood dream to study and help conserve these beautiful creatures, before I grew up became overly practical and put the much more sensible selection of a radiotherapy degree on my UCAS form that is. I think it’s simply awful that the Baiji is now a creature of history.

saturday, glasgow! [20 Jul 2007|11:56pm]

Hailing from the town of Gympie, Australia Darren Hanlon‘s musical education began young with a neighbour introducing him to a great variety of artists including The Smiths, he played in bands for a few years before finally releasing his own music on the highly influential Candle Records imprint.

His latest album “Fingertips and Mountain Tops” recorded in a period in which Darren was recovering from serious illness finds him to be in an intensely creative period, a man at his song writing peak. Recorded in a silent movie theatre and featuring contributions from contemporaries such as Jesse Sandoval from The Shins and Mark Moonone from The Lucksmiths, his songs are both eclectic and fantastic.

Having already toured the united states with cult indie darlings The Magnetic Fields and finishing this summer with a set at the highly influential popfest in Athens (along with Daniel Johnston and Tullycraft), Georgia this intimate set at our wee local 13th Note promises to be spell binding.

Support comes from local folksters The Tempus Fugitives and the ethereal Ceylan Delikanlimember of the Parsonage Choir.

Also as it is out birthday expect there to be free cakes, balloons and cheer
